The 100mg strength is the maximum recommended sildenafil dose used for erectile dysfunction (ED). It may be considered when a lower dose has not produced an adequate response and a prescriber decides that the 100mg strength is clinically appropriate. It is not automatically the best starting dose: UK product information describes 50mg as the usual recommended dose, with adjustment down to 25mg or up to 100mg according to effectiveness and tolerability.
Sildenafil supports the normal erection response to sexual stimulation. It does not increase sexual desire and does not cause an automatic erection. The right strength depends on response, side effects, health conditions and other medicines, so the 100mg dose should be used only as directed on the dispensing label.
Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor used to treat erectile dysfunction in adult men. The 100mg tablet contains the same active ingredient as lower-strength sildenafil tablets and branded Viagra 100mg, but the amount of sildenafil in each tablet is higher.
For erectile dysfunction, sildenafil 100mg is the maximum recommended dose. “Maximum” does not mean “best” or “standard” for everyone. Many adults are started on 50mg, while some need 25mg because of tolerability, health factors or interacting medicines. A move to 100mg should be based on clinical review rather than on the assumption that a higher number will always work better.
Sildenafil 100mg tablets contain 100mg of sildenafil in each tablet. The manufacturer, tablet appearance and packaging may vary depending on the product dispensed. If this strength is prescribed, use only the tablets supplied to you and follow the dispensing label and patient information leaflet.
A prescriber may consider 100mg when a lower dose has been used correctly but has not provided an adequate erection response and the person has tolerated sildenafil well enough to consider an increase. Before changing the dose, the review should also consider timing, food, alcohol, sexual stimulation, underlying health and other medicines.
One disappointing attempt does not necessarily mean the dose is too low. A heavy meal can delay absorption, substantial alcohol can make erections more difficult and taking the tablet too close to sexual activity can make the response seem weaker. The broader sildenafil dosage guide explains how 25mg, 50mg and 100mg are selected without making this strength-specific page the owner of every sildenafil dosing query.
If the 100mg strength has been prescribed for you, follow the dispensing label and the advice from the prescriber or pharmacist. UK product information describes sildenafil for ED as being taken approximately one hour before sexual activity. NHS guidance also notes that it may be taken up to four hours before sex.
Swallow the prescribed dose with water. Sexual stimulation is required. Do not take sildenafil more than once in a day, and do not add another tablet because the first dose seems slow or incomplete. Taking sildenafil with food can delay the onset compared with taking it while fasted, particularly after a heavy or high-fat meal.
Alcohol does not simply “cancel” sildenafil, but drinking a lot can make it harder to get an erection and can worsen dizziness or low-blood-pressure symptoms. If results are inconsistent, review how the medicine was taken rather than changing the dose yourself.

For some people who have had an inadequate response to 50mg, increasing to 100mg can improve the erectile response. However, the higher dose is not automatically more effective for everyone, and it can increase medicine exposure and the likelihood or intensity of recognised side effects.
If 50mg already provides an adequate erection with acceptable side effects, there may be no clinical reason to move to sildenafil 100mg. The aim is to use the lowest suitable dose that gives an adequate response. If 100mg does not work despite correct use, taking more is not the standard next step; the maximum recommended ED dose is 100mg.
Several factors can affect the response to this strength even when the prescribed dose is appropriate. A heavy meal can delay absorption. Excessive alcohol can worsen erectile function and increase unwanted effects. Sexual stimulation is still necessary, and anxiety, relationship factors or underlying health conditions can also affect the result.
Other medicines matter too. Some can increase sildenafil exposure, while others can create important safety risks. If a new medicine has been started since sildenafil was prescribed, or your health has changed, ask for a review before the next dose rather than assuming the existing 100mg instruction is still appropriate.
A higher sildenafil dose does not reliably make the medicine work faster or last longer. The general timing guidance is similar across strengths. Sildenafil usually needs time to be absorbed, and food can delay the onset.
If your main question is duration, use the dedicated guide to how long the 100mg strength lasts rather than increasing the dose to try to extend the treatment window. Taking extra sildenafil or combining erectile dysfunction medicines without clinical advice can increase risk.
Sildenafil 100mg can cause the same types of side effects seen with lower strengths, including headache, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, dizziness and visual disturbance. Because medicine exposure is higher at 100mg, some people may notice adverse effects more than they did at a lower dose.
Do not assume that a side effect is harmless because it is listed as recognised. Speak to a pharmacist, prescriber or other healthcare professional if side effects are troublesome, persistent or make you unsure about taking another dose. A lower dose or another treatment may be more appropriate after review.
Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, a severe allergic reaction, sudden loss or marked change of vision or hearing, severe faintness, or a painful erection lasting longer than four hours. Tell the healthcare professional that sildenafil was taken and when. Do not use nitrate medicines for chest pain after taking sildenafil.
Sildenafil must not be taken with nitrate medicines or nitric oxide donors because the combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. It is also contraindicated with riociguat. Certain serious heart, blood-pressure, liver and eye conditions can make sildenafil unsuitable or require specialist assessment.
This is not a complete contraindication or interaction list. The dedicated sildenafil safety information page should remain the specialist owner for detailed safety queries. Read the patient information leaflet supplied with the medicine and complete the clinical assessment accurately before treatment is supplied.
Do not increase above 100mg or take a second dose in the same day because the response is disappointing. UK product information sets 100mg as the maximum recommended dose for erectile dysfunction.
A prescriber can review whether the tablet was taken correctly, whether food or alcohol affected the response, whether there was adequate sexual stimulation, whether side effects limit the dose, and whether another health issue or medicine may be contributing. Some people need a different erectile dysfunction treatment or further assessment rather than more sildenafil.
Generic sildenafil and Viagra contain sildenafil as the active ingredient. When the same strength is compared, the key differences are usually manufacturer, brand, appearance, packaging, inactive ingredients and price rather than the medicine’s intended mechanism of action.
This page should not duplicate the full brand comparison. For questions about branding, generic equivalence and practical differences, read the dedicated Sildenafil vs Viagra guide. Keeping that comparison separate protects the 100mg page as the strength-specific owner.

Sildenafil 100mg is the maximum recommended ED dose, not a default target. It may be considered when a lower dose has not provided an adequate response and the higher strength is clinically suitable. Correct timing, food, alcohol, sexual stimulation, other medicines and underlying health can all affect the result.
Use only the prescribed dose and do not take more than one sildenafil dose in a day. If 100mg is ineffective, causes troublesome side effects or no longer seems appropriate after a health or medicine change, ask for a clinical review rather than increasing the dose yoursel
